Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker promises more money to help families afford child care.
Wednesday, in his budget address, he proposed more funding to the child care assistance program. But local providers said it takes more than just a speech and money to make that program better.
It's a full house Wednesday at ABC Daycare for Christine Carter. She's provided child care for nearly 20 years. Right now, she says 85% of her kids are signed up under the child care assistance program.
"A lot of them will come at let's say 7:30 in the morning and they're not picked up until 5. So I have their child awake longer than they do at home so it's very important what daycare providers do for these children," said Carter.
While she said the program is great, it has had its issues. Carter said too often payments from the state are not made on time. It happened to her earlier this year.
"Coming into January and you're not paid until the end of the month when normally you're paid at the beginning of the month. It hurts," said Carter.
Wednesday, Governor Pritzker proposed a plan to put more money into the program.
"This will result in eligible families paying no more than 7 percent of their income for childcare," said Pritzker.
Carter welcomes the idea to expand the program but she wants to see it managed better as well.
"Myself, I'm a single parent so when 85 percent of my income is state paid for daycare, it puts a big crunch on you," said Carter.
Wednesday's proposal is just that. Lawmakers will still have to debate this and other proposals and work through the rest of this session to pass the budget.
