Assistance centers open to help Butte County voters - Chico Enterprise-Record

PARADISE — Butte County opened its first three voter assistance centers Saturday.

Located in Chico, Oroville and Paradise, the centers are intended to help resolve any issues voters may have. Examples include receiving a replacement ballot, updating voter registration, needing language assistance and registering to vote.

They can also be used to drop off ballots.

However, Butte County Clerk-Recorder Candace Grubbs said voters are encouraged to vote by mail and only use the centers for assistance.

Butte County voters should have received their mail-in ballots, which are postage paid, within the last two weeks.

“We want everybody to turn in a ballot,” Grubbs said.

Grubbs visited the Paradise center Saturday for its opening.

She said the law requires one early voter assistance centers for every 50,000 registered voters.

As of Friday, Butte County had 116,220 registered voters.

Paradise has 5,166, roughly 10,000 fewer than the previous year.

Grubbs said the county made an effort to validate the addresses of people who may have left since the Camp Fire.

“They’re scattered far and wide,” Grubbs said. “If they’re planning to return to Paradise, they can still vote on Paradise issues.”

“People are still in transition,” Grubbs added. “Are we going back? Are we going to rebuild?”

The Paradise center received voters sporadically Saturday, with most going to change their party preference.

“That may be the reason they didn’t receive the ballot they were expecting because they updated their voter registration recently or maybe it’s been a while,” said Butte County Elections Manager Keaton Denlay, who manned the Paradise center Saturday.

He encouraged voters to go to buttevotes.net and check their status.

Denlay also recommends coming in early with any questions or problems.

“It starts real slow and sort of exponential growth as you get to the Monday and Tuesday of the election,” Denlay said.

The three early centers are located at 155 Nelson Ave. in Oroville, 6626 Skyway in Paradise and the Chico State Bell Memorial Union.

Next Saturday, an additional 10 voter assistance centers will be opened throughout Butte County.

Their hours and locations can be found online.

Along with the voter assistance centers, multiple ballot drop box locations will be located in Oroville, Chico, Paradise, Gridley and Durham.
