Shots-fired call, handgun seen leads to Dayton police asking for backup - WHIO

UPDATE @ 10:28 p.m.: The shots-fired report escalated to the officer-needs-assistance call when Dayton police saw a handgun among a group of six people who were in and around a car, a police sergeant said.

When officers asked for the gun, members of the group and neighborhood residents began arguing with the officers, the sergeant said.

Police searched the car and found fake drugs, the sergeant said. No one in the group was arrested.

But, the sergeant said, police did take a juvenile into custody on an incident unrelated to the shots-fired call.

UPDATE @ 10:04 p.m.: 

A Dayton police officer called for backup when he found himself alone facing several people on Catalpa Drive at Sunnyview Avenue after he responded to a shots-fired call.

According to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch, police were dispatched about 9:26 p.m. after ShotSpotter alerted police to shots being fired in the neighborhood. The ShotSpotter system is geared toward helping police quickly identify the location of gunshots.

The call for officer needs assistance, known in law enforcement parlance as a "signal 99," was made. When a "signal 99" is made, every available police officer is to go to the dispatched location. 

There have been no reports of anyone being hit by the gunfire, according to a dispatch sergeant.

INITIAL REPORT

A call for a Dayton police officer in need of assistance was called Tuesday night for an incident in the 2500 block of Catalpa Drive. 

The call, referred to as a "signal 99" was dropped about 2 minutes after it was made about 9:40 p.m. 

Just before the "signal 99" was called, police indicated they had as many as six people at gunpoint. 

News Center 7 is headed to the scene and we will update this developing report as we learn details.
