Assemblywoman Christy Smith recently highlighted efforts to provide Assembly Bill 5 (AB 5) assistance, officials said Monday.
“This is a priority for me this year, and I look forward to working with employers, workers and my colleagues on this issue,” Smith said in a statement.
AB 5 entitles workers classified as employees to greater labor protections at their place of work. This includes minimum wage laws, sick leave, and unemployment and workers’ compensation benefits. These benefits do not apply to independent contractors, according to Smith’s office.
The bill presses industries and businesses that rely on independent contractors to take them on as employees. This leaves many businesses struggling to find ways of covering their new employees, according to the assembly member.
“Relief for independent contractors, impacted small businesses and nonprofits are essential as we implement AB 5 and address its challenges,” Smith said.
Smith asked for a one-year tax exemption of $800 for transitioning LLCs to help formalize small businesses and maintain existing business relationships, according to her office.
Smith also asked for a $20 million budget allocation to help community nonprofit arts groups comply with the law, adding “these steps will help California workers’ futures and mitigate the pressures (businesses) face,” according to Smith’s office.
“Members of the community affected by AB 5 are encouraged to share their stories with my office,” added Smith.
