Schriever welcomes new career assistance advisor - Schriever Air Force Base

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. --

The 50th Force Support Squadron gained a new career assistance advisor to help Airmen navigate their careers and set them up for long term success.

Filling the role of CAA for Team Schriever since Feb. 28 is Master Sgt. Kathryn North, former 21st Medical Squadron radiology flight chief at Peterson Air Force Base. North has been fulfilling this duty since Jan. 28.

“Her job is to provide career assistance and advice to the enlisted force,” said James Driscoll, 50th Force Support Squadron education center flight chief. “A lot of times, Airmen and NCOs go through and do their jobs every day, and although they’re receiving mentorship from their supervisors, they’re not getting long-term mentorship on how to better their career and that’s why the career assistance advisor is here.”

Additionally, the CAA helps Airmen looking to separate from the Air Force prepare for long-term success.

“The career assistance advisor helps [Airmen] understand there’s nothing wrong with having a plan and getting out – but get out with success,” Driscoll said.

North’s duties include advising commanders and supervisors on force management, conducting professional enhancement courses for NCOs, senior NCOs and company grade officers, and coordinating the Flight Commander’s and Informed Decisions courses.

“I think there are a lot of things supervisors don’t know or haven’t learned,” she said. “It’s important we get info out to them through the courses we offer, because if we inform those individuals, they inform others which leads to a more informed force.”

Despite recognizing her passion for helping Airmen grow in their careers, it was four more years before she applied for the CAA position here.

“When I came back to the career field after teaching, I found that same passion with my Airmen, but I had a small shop,” North said. “So I felt if I was given an opportunity to do a job like this, I could have a greater impact across an installation instead of just my little shop.”

Despite working primarily for the enlisted force, the career assistance advisor is also available to civilians and officers.

“I’m here as a resource for all of Team Schriever,” she said. “Even if I don’t know an answer, that doesn’t mean I can’t go find it or find someone who can help.”

One of North’s primary concerns is to reach more Airmen across the installation to include bringing her courses to the restricted area.

“Right now, I’m trying to get a pulse on the hot items for Team Schriever,” she said. “I want to update our material to reflect any feedback we have. I think breathing fresh air into material and taking feedback seriously will be impactful. I don’t want to stick with, ‘this is how we’ve always done it,’ because the population and its needs are continually growing.”
