Cultural Arts Coalition Received $4,000 NYS Technical Assistance Grant - HamletHub

Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition is the proud recipient of a $4,000 Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) for assitance with the Old Town Hall Theater located at 67 Main Street in Brewster NY. The Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) program is a regrant partnership between the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and the Preservation League of New York State. The Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area has provided additional support for this program for four qualifying projects in their service region. The TAG program supports arts centers, historic sites, music halls, theaters, libraries, and other cultural nonprofit or municipal entities that steward historic buildings throughout New York State.

The Southeast Old Town Hall in the Village of Brewster was designed by Child and DeGoll Architects in 1896. The building served the community as a government center and courthouse, community gathering place, theatre and movie house, ballroom, canteen, museum, and cultural arts center. Centrally located in the village, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition (TOSCAC) now uses the structure while spearheading a large restoration and rehabilitation program for it in coordination with the Town of Southeast, the Southeast Museum, and other stakeholders. TOSCAC uses the lower level space in the Old Town Hall as their “Studio Around the Corner,” a home to host exhibits, concerts, lectures, events, and other programs. The group has made impressive rehabilitation progress in recent years but still has more work to do. A $4,000 Technical Assistance Grant will enable TOSCAC to hire Lacey Thaler Reilly Wilson Architecture & Preservation LLP of Albany to complete an exterior building condition survey of the Old Town Hall. This report will lead to an understanding of current condition issues and outline a plan for repair of the brickwork, stonework, cast stone ornamentation, front entry stairs, trim, windows, doors, roofing, and gutter system.

The overall restoration is estimated to cost upwards of $3M.  TOSCAC plans to fund the project with a combination of grants, private donations, and myriad fundraising activities including the annual Brewster Music and Fall Festivals.

The Preservation League of New York State and their program partners at the New York State Council on the Arts and the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area are thrilled to announce the recipients of their 2019 Technical Assistance Grants. During this grant cycle, 11 projects representing 11 different counties have been selected by an independent panel of preservation professionals. A total of $41,912 was awarded.

With the announcement of the 2019 awards, support provided by TAG since its launch in 2012 totals $374,377. These grants have directly advanced 129 historic preservation efforts.

“The positive effects of the TAG program can be felt in dozens of communities across New York State,” said Preservation League President Jay DiLorenzo. “We are excited to fund another diverse group of projects this year, thanks to our program partners at NYSCA and the additional generosity of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.”

“Preserving our state’s historic structures is essential to building and maintaining healthy communities across New York State,” said NYSCA Executive Director Mara Manus. “In partnership with NYSCA, the TAG Program provides critical support to significant sites and cultural anchors statewide, from the Mohawk Valley home of one of the first African American Civil War soldiers to historic theaters in Utica and Syracuse.”

“We are thrilled to support this program,” said Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area Executive Director Scott Kellar. “TAG provides an avenue for us of evaluating and funding different projects, that are important to our partners. Congratulations to all the recipients!”
