The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs will begin at area libraries this week.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

VITA will be available in 2020 at the East Bend, Boonville, Alleghany, Yadkinville, Elkin and Mount Airy branches of the Northwest Regional Library system. Appointments must be scheduled in advance by calling the library of choice.

VITA volunteers will be at the Boonville Public Library from Jan. 27 through April 7. Hours are Monday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Tuesdays 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 22 and April 4. To schedule an appointment call 336-367-7737.

East Bend Public Library will have VITA volunteers available beginning Feb. 1 through April 4 on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. To schedule an appointment call 336-699-5100.

Yadkin Public Library will have VITA volunteers beginning Jan. 30 through March 26 on Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. To schedule an appointment call 336-679-8792.

“For over fifty years, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs have provided an important service across the country. We need more community volunteers to continue the good work. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Neighborhood volunteers who are interested in learning about taxes and then helping others by preparing income tax returns for free are needed,” said Joan Sherif, Northwestern Regional Library Director. “All volunteers preparing returns are IRS-certified to complete tax returns for people with low to moderate incomes, senior citizens, disabled individuals and for people for whom English is a second language.
