FEMA specialists will be available for assistance in Sioux Falls and Yankton this week, which is the final week for those who sustained damage in September's floods to register with the agency.
Mitigation and flood insurance specialists will be available to give advice on how to repair and prevent storm damage from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at Menards stores at 3001 S. Shirley Ave. in Sioux Falls and 3210 Broadway Ave. in Yankton.
Friday is the deadline to register for federal and state disaster assistance. Since a disaster declaration was issued Nov. 18, people in 12 counties and two reservations within South Dakota have been awarded a total of more than $12.2 million in federal disaster assistance, more than $4.6 million of which came from FEMA.
Those interested in registering with FEMA can do so by calling the disaster assistance helpline at 800-621-3362 between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. or by going to DisasterAssistance.gov. Both the helpline and website will still be available to answer questions and give help with registration following the registration deadline.
Friday is also the deadline for those who have sustained property damage to apply for a disaster loan with the U.S. Small Business Administration, which can be contacted by calling customer service at 800-659-2955, emailing DisasterCustomerService@sba.gov or visiting disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/.
Additionally, free legal assistance is available through FEMA and the state government. Those who were impacted in September's storms can call East River Legal Services' hotline at 800-952-3015 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
