Area artists win top spots at Assistance League of Houston show - Houston Chronicle

Artist Clinton Millsap of Spring/Klein won first place in the 50th Assistance League of Houston’s Celebrate Texas Art Show with his haunting portrait Recover.

The exhibition, with 62 works of original art selected by juror Cara Manes, opened to the public Jan. 16 in the KRB Tower, 601 Jefferson, and will close March 13.

Millsap, in graduate school at Houston Baptist University, painted the 71- by 48- by 1.75-inch winning portrait in acrylic and iron oxide paint on canvas.

Second place went to Orna Feinstein of Bellaire and third to painter Donald Matheson of Fort Worth. Of the 878 pieces of art entered, 62 were chosen by Manes, associate curator of The Museum of Modern Art, (MOMA), NYC.

Feinstein won second place with a 26- by 14.5- by 1.75-inch sculpture monoprint on cement, Dendro Beton #30. Matheson won third place with a 30- by 40- by 1.25-inch acrylic on canvas, Valparaiso.

Millsap said, “I was truly impressed by the show’s eclectic art, from the range of art mediums to sizes and subject matter. It really showed the diverse rich culture of Texas art and cultural diversity of the artists that live here, from all over the world. I was so very impressed by the philanthropic work the Assistance League does in the Houston art community. Everyone I spoke with from submission down to winning the awards exuded kindness and pure excitement — a love of art was visible in their joyful smiles and handshakes.

He talked of his painting and said the iron oxide paint goes through a real patina process with an acid bath to oxidize the metal reactive paint, causing a true rust.

The subject of his painting is a student of his, Euduardo Simba. Millsap teaches from his small Millsap School of Art. Simba is from Cabinda, Angola in South Central Africa.

“He has wonderful story of survival from his country all the way to being an American immigrant,” said Millsap. “I take portraits of my students to collect faces for my portraits. His portrait seemed like it had to be done. I use a term in class “ Recover “ — I say you can always recover your drawing, your painting, your good idea. I say recover to remind them it can be fixed or learned from and started over. Simba took the message to heart and put it into a speech,“ With God’s love you can always recover, recover your life, your faith.“

Millsap said he teaches drawing and painting classes in north Houston in two-day workshops every four to six weeks.

“I have been drawing and painting since I could hold a crayon, I always made art. Which is 40-plus years,” he said.

His first-place award at the Assistance League of Houston Show isn’t his only recognition.

“I entered a competition when I was age 14 in high school at local music store, I won a statewide competition to make a sculpture of Iron Maidens Mascot “ Eddie,” he explained.

“Other than that I have not entered any competitions or juried shows until now. This is my first one to have entered. I have never won first place in a Juried Art Show, or even applied to one until this Assistance League Show was brought to my attention.

Parking is free in the KBR Tower parking garage; lobby hours where artworks will be displayed are 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. weekdays.

Show Chairwoman Jaci Day encourages visitors to the complimentary show saying, “There are many nearby restaurants just south of the KRB Tower on Smith and Louisiana. We hope art lovers will make an afternoon/evening of seeing this show by all Texas artists.” There is a walkway joining the KBR Tower and the Whitehall Hotel which has valet parking and a restaurant.

The art is for sale and proceeds benefit Assistance League of Houston’s philanthropic programs including scholarships to art students and provision of art supplies to public schools in partnership with the Denali Foundation. Contact Jaciday@swbell.net for information.
