A visit by US special representative for Syria James Jeffrey and US Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft to Turkey on Tuesday was a clear message to Ankara and its rivals that Washington supports it and would provide its ally with all necessary assistance in Syria’s Idlib region, sources in Washington said.

"Turkey is a NATO ally. Much of the military uses American equipment. We will make sure that equipment is ready and usable," Jeffrey told reporters in Turkey's border province of Hatay.

The visit of the US delegation came amid growing alarm over escalating violence in Syria.

US media outlets quoted US officials on Tuesday as confirming that the aid would not involve moving troops to the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib.

On Monday, US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said the US would not be providing Turkey with air support in Idlib.

“The United States is looking at providing increased humanitarian aid for the persons in Syria. That’s one thing I had a conversation with (Secretary of State Mike Pompeo) about that,” Esper told a news briefing at the Pentagon.

Last week, Ankara urged the US to supply the Patriot air defense system for deployment on Turkey’s southern border amid the escalating situation in Idlib.

Observers said that Jeffrey would discuss such assistance with Turkey, despite knowing that Washington’s priority in Syria is to stop the attack on Idlib.

For his part, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab expressed solidarity with Turkey during a visit to Ankara where he held a joint conference with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu.

"We support Turkey's efforts to re-establish a ceasefire agreed in 2018 and to protect those civilians fleeing the regime's monstrous assault," he said.

The Minister said Britain was concerned by the Syrian government's actions in Idlib as well as the "significant escalation in military action by Russia".

Last week, US President Donald Trump reaffirmed his support for Turkey’s efforts to de-escalate the situation in northwest Syria and avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.
