Trump declares disaster in Michigan coronavirus outbreak, opening up FEMA assistance - Crain's Detroit Business

President Donald Trump on Saturday declared Michigan's coronavirus outbreak a major disaster, opening up the state to getting federal funding and assistance in dealing with the pandemic.

"The president's action makes federal funding available for crisis counseling for affected individuals in all areas in the State of Michigan," the White House said Saturday morning in a statement.

"Federal funding is also available to State, tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance, for all areas in the state of Michigan impacted by COVID-19."

As of Friday morning, 3,657 Michigan residents have tested positive for COVID-19 and the virus has claimed the lives of 92 people in the state. As of Saturday morning, Michigan had the fifth most number of COVID-19 infections in the country, according to the New York Times' state-by-state tracking data.

Trump's declaration of a major disaster in Michigan comes amid a weeklong feud he's had with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who formally requested the disaster designation on Thursday.

During a Friday evening press conference at the White House, the president said he's told Vice President Mike Pence, "don't call the woman in Michigan."

"If they don't treat you right, I don't call," Trump said of Whitmer.

That came hours after Whitmer claimed in an interview on WWJ 950AM that medical supply "vendors with whom we had contracts are now being told not to send stuff here to Michigan. It's really concerning."

Whitmer's office did not provide further detail about who told vendors to not ship medical supplies to Michigan.

But Whitmer did not back down from those comments in a Friday evening interview on CNN, before the president's press conference.

"We've entered into a number of contracts and as we are getting closer to the date when shipments are supposed to come in, they're getting canceled or they're getting delayed," Whitmer told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "We've been told they're going first to the federal government."
