LOWELL — The University of Massachusetts and Enterprise Bank have launched a new tuition assistance program for bank employees pursuing degrees.
The program, which is part of Enterprise Bank’s Total Rewards Program, allows employees to delay tuition billing until after the course is completed and grades are released. If the students meet grade qualifications, the bank will pay tuition directly to UMass Lowell.
“One of the things I always regretted was not continuing on and getting my master’s degree,” Enterprise IT Systems Engineer Dean Frechette said.
After taking a job at Enterprise, Frechette enrolled in an IT master’s program at UMass Lowell. The Tyngsboro resident currently has seven classes left to complete for his degree.
Initially, Frechette said he had to pay the tuition money to the school, and would later be reimbursed if he met grade requirements. He once had to take three semesters off because he couldn’t come up with the money.
“It’s been for me personally a big help,” Frechette said of the new tuition assistance program.
The program took effect in January for the 2020 spring semester. Enterprise employees are eligible to enroll in programs that relate to their current positions, or other positions within the bank.
Enterprise Bank has also launched a similar tuition assistance program with Middlesex Community College.
“We value corporate education partnerships like these that enable us to strengthen the skills and knowledge of our local workforce, benefiting the individual employees, their employer and the greater community,” said Steven F. Tello, UMass Lowell vice provost for graduate, online and professional studies in a news release.
“Enterprise has been great partner of the university,” Tello said in a phone interview. “This sort of just brings that relationship closer.”
Tello said the university is open to exploring similar partnerships with other companies in the region.
