TUCSON - The last two years have seen major strides for Casa Alitas in what they are able to offer asylum seeking migrants.
A new program starting soon will bring students from the University of Arizona College of Nursing to the shelter, where they will be able to bring another level of medical care to migrants.
This latest partnership will improve Casa Alitas ability to help families move forward with their lives as they seek asylum by making sure the children are up to date on immunizations and have the documentation to support it.
"To be able to give those kids an opportunity to get enrolled in school quickly and help the parents with eliminating some of those barriers, it helps everybody," said Diego Pina-Lopez, Program Manager for Casa Alitas.
The goal of this new partnership is to get children as prepared as possible for entry into schools in the communities where they will be living. Currently, Casa Alitas was only able to make sure they are safe to travel.
"This is more than that, this is so that we can put in their hands a document that evidences what they need and what schools are gonna be looking for to be able to go to school," said Audrey Russell-Kibble, clinical assistant professor at UArizona college of Nursing.
Students will help with immunizations and other medical needs at the shelter.
"With doing the child wellness we've been able to further develop the resources and services for the families," said Pina-Lopez.
It is another step forward for the shelter as they continuously look to offer more.
"You know we're here looking at the wonderful people and we just want to do as much as we can and so we think ok, what else? And this is just one more what else," said Russell-Kibble.
