To the Editor:
This weekend we had the privilege of having four wonderful young men come and help us with yard cleanup. Members of the Newtown Football team: Cameron Ward, John Haddick, Carter Mixon, and Sean Gordon, along with Jessica Ward from Newtown Youth and Family Services, which partnered with FONS (Friends of Newtown Seniors) to offer this service to seniors.
Jessica called me to see if I knew of seniors who might need help. After giving her some names and phone numbers, she asked if we would be interested. Normally, since I’m the shortest one in the family, I’m the one designated to clean the leaves out from under the deck. This year, because of an injury, I knew neither my husband or I would be able to do this. Having just received a delivery of mulch, they made quick work of making our property beautiful. I know they went to a lot of other homes along with other volunteers from the football team the remainder of the day. We cannot thank you all enough for helping our yard get cleaned up.
These are the types of services which are a win-win for everyone. Seniors get chores accomplished which they are unable to do and these youngsters help and in some cases learn from the seniors’ experience. By the way, Jessica worked as hard as the boys!
In Gratitude,
Anna and Dan Wiedemann
