Thanks to a new program, rental and utility assistance will soon be available to Georgians dealing with financial hardships connected to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“The thing that’s been really hard over the last few months has been hearing from people who are really behind on their rent and have no way to make their rent payments,” said Dave Whisnant, who serves as the division director of housing assistance for the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
Whisnant and Tonya Cureton Curry, the deputy commissioner for housing for the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, were guests on Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look.”
They talked with show host Rose Scott about the State of Georgia Rental Assistance Program.
The program that’s being funded by $552 million that the state received in stimulus dollars through the Federal Emergency Rental Assistance Plan comes just weeks before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eviction moratorium is set to expire on March 31.
During the virtual conversation, the guests shared program eligibility requirements, instructions on how to apply for emergency relief and explained that the state is hiring additional staff to help process applications.
“For us, housing is fundamental to really every aspect of our lives,” explained Cureton Curry.
