There are multiple ways to support the families of the 10 victims of Monday’s mass shooting at a King Soopers in Boulder.
The Colorado Healing Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has activated its sources for people to donate to support “the needs of victims, families, and the larger impacted community affected by the Boulder King Soopers tragedy.” CHF executive director Jordan Finegan said the funds will go immediately to the families affected.
“We work directly with the organizations working with the victims on the ground,” Finegan said.
Founded in 2018, CHF was built by a group of victims’ advocates and community leaders to ensure that there was help for those who have been impacted by mass crime similar to Monday’s. The organization sets aside money that is at the ready for victims and their families.
That includes coordinating with the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance to find out what the Boulder community needs.
“We’re basically created to wait and sit for something to happen,” Finegan said. “We’re able to have the money right away.”
Funds cover short- and long-term needs, from arranging rental cars to covering travel expenses to help families get to town for funerals.
“This all about the immediacy of the fund,” Finegan said.
The CHF Board of Trustees determines if the fund needs to be activated by the number of casualties and impacted witnesses, the strain on local resources. Victims’ relatives and people who were injured in such incidents are given priority for CHF assistance.
