Upper Valley Mend, a nonprofit organization that offers a variety of services from food to housing for Upper Valley residents, has expanded its Emergency Assistance Program. The program is designed for residents in the Cascade School District area with emergency shelter, rent and utility assistance as well as fuel and transportation assistance.
“Even before the pandemic began, we had the goal to provide additional services,” said Kaylin Bettinger, executive director. “For many years, we’ve provided financial assistance for folks in a crisis, maybe they lost their job and can’t pay their rent.”
The expansion has incorporated the service of follow up support to ensure access to specific resources, dependent on the individual situation, whether that be unemployment causing difficulty paying rent or an overwhelming medical bill. New emergency assistance program manager, Liz Hurtado, was hired in January to help expand the program.
“Our goal is to offer continued support to people. We understand that navigating social service programs and even understanding how those programs work is a very complicated process,” said Hurtado. “And our goal is to just make it easier for people.”
