Unemployment assistance coming for self-employed - kwwl.com

(KWWL) -- As the country attempts to wrangle a struggling economy and record numbers of unemployment, self-employed Iowans may qualify for new benefits under the CARES Act.

“We will get to you and we will get your claims paid," said Iowa Workforce Development Director Beth Townsend Friday in regards to the thousands of Iowans looking for help.

Those in the service industry, many who make commission are doing what they can to try and get by.

"The majority of our sales come from providing services for people," said Wendy Malcolm, a co-owner of Trio Salon Spa in Waterloo.

She and her business partner, Tonya Brooks, as well as their employees are awaiting unemployment checks.

"We think everyone's been approved, but no one has gotten any money yet, so its been hard and frustrating trying to navigate everything," Malcolm said.

While the doors to the business are shut, they've looked for other ways to pay the bills.

"We've been able to do some product sales to customers, which we're very thankful that people have still been reaching out to us for product sales, but other than that we have no money coming in," Brooks said.

Others who are self-employed most likely didn't qualify for unemployment until recently, when the CARES Act created "Pandemic Unemployment Assistance."

"Here in the next few weeks, we're going to start seeing that relief come through for those who didn't qualify under normal insurance purposes," said Iowa Workforce Development's Deputy Director Ryan West.

This particular relief is retroactive to February 2nd, 2020 or the time of job loss.

West encourages anyone with questions about PUA or unemployment benefits to first access their website, this frees up the phone lines for those without internet access or who may not speak English.

The separation of service workers from their clients is challenging both financially and mentally.

"I am going crazy. Absolutely insane. I miss my clients. Talking on the phone or video chat is just not the same as in person," said Cassie Peterson, a cosmetologist in Waterloo.
