Single disabled mom is one of thousands helped by Delco’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program

Almost two years ago, Aldan resident Tashana Murrell was working as a patient care tech at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The 45-year-old single mom was taking care of her 12-year-old daughter and her 7-year-old granddaughter from Georgia. “When COVID hit … and everything got turned around with school, I decided to take a stress leave with everything with my family,” Murrell said, especially with the kids needing to stay home for school.

Chester County budget includes no new taxes, but funds for a morgue

The Chester County commissioners are expected to approve a proposed 2022 budget that includes no increase in the current property tax millage rate and a long-sought new forensic coroner’s facility. The commissioners are scheduled to vote on the $688 million spending and revenue plan at their business session on Wednesday. Under the plan put together by the county administration, county taxes would stay the same as they are this year, at 4.551 mills.

$2 million in funding secured for project that will bring hundreds of new high-wage jobs to Chester County

State Sen. Carolyn Comitta announced $2 million in state funding for the construction of a new 145,000-square-foot office building in Tredyffrin Township that will support hundreds of new high-wage jobs. The funds will support the construction of a new corporate headquarters for Equus Capital Partners, a real estate investment manager that acquires and develops office, multi-family, industrial, research and development, and retail assets.

Operation Holiday: Single mom working to give son a happy Christmas

That last year has been rough for Tami and her 6-year-old son, and the difficulties of the COVID pandemic are just the beginning. Tami’s husband died of cancer last December, and since then it’s been a struggle to raise him as a single mother. And with Tami (not her real name) out of work since her husband’s passing, they’ve relied on COVID-related subsidies and rent assistance that soon will no longer be available to them.

Days of yore recalled in Souderton display

As often happens, it started with one and grew. Souderton resident Joann Johannsen began making models of friends’ homes as a thank you to the friends. Souderton-Telford Historical Society member Dan Yocum, who in November was elected Souderton’s mayor, asked Johannsen to make one of the models that could be used by people making donations to the Society at public events.

Grotz: NFC mediocrity shouldn’t get Eagles’ fans playoff hopes too high

The Eagles got help Sunday from the hated Dallas Cowboys, who defeated the Washington Football Team and presented an eye-opening blueprint of how to do it, although we don’t recommend Nick Sirianni follow the lead of Mike McCarthy by guaranteeing victory. And before you turn that result into a lazy headline, remember the centuries-old quotation that it’s never too late to be what you might have been.

Baylor keeps Villanova to historically low point total on way to win, No. 1 ranking

No matter where Villanova guards Justin Moore and Collin Gillespie turned, there was another Baylor defender there to smother them. And now the defending national champion Bears are poised to be No. 1 for the first time this season. James Akinjo had 16 points and second-ranked Baylor dominated in a 57-36 victory Sunday over the sixth-ranked Wildcats, who scored their fewest points and had their worst shooting game in coach Jay Wright’s 21 seasons.

Television: British import ‘Vera’ is binge-worthy viewing

British television has given me a new show to binge, all 11 seasons of it. I took my time finding it, but once I saw one episode of “Vera,” with Brenda Blethyn playing a rumpled working class chief detective assigned to complex London murder cases, I craved the lot of them. The clues from which Vera Stanhope solves her mysteries at times don’t add up in the way you’d expect, but Blethyn and her nuclear cast always keep their pursuits of the guilty interesting and entertaining.
