LINCOLN, Nebraska (KTIV) - Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts signed Legislative Bill 450 into law on Thursday.
The bill will provide 100% coverage of resident tuition charges of any Nebraska National Guard Member that enrolls in a Nebraska state-supported University, College, or University, or 50% of the resident tuition charges for a graduate or professional degree program.
If the member decides to attend a private institution they will receive credit no-higher than they would if they attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The governor says that it is important to invest in the people that keep the state of Nebraska safe.
"We want to encourage people to develop themselves further so they can continue to serve the people of Nebraska, and I think this also helps attract people to the National Guard so we continue to have the same type of people step up and protect our fellow citizens," said Gov. Ricketts, (R) Nebraska.
Any National Guard Member that wishes to receive the tuition assistance must get approval from their commanding officer that they are within satisfactory guard performance in order to receive the credit.
Any member that does decide to take the credit will agree in writing that they will serve in the Nebraska National Guard for three years after the completion of the courses they received credit for, if they do not complete these three years they will asked to reimburse the state.
In the bill, it states that during any fiscal year the amount of tuition credits shall not exceed $900,000, and that priority will be given to those that have received previous tuition credits.
Anyone receiving the credits must first exhaust all available federal tuition assistance benefits before receiving the credits.
The bill also includes that the spouse and children of the National Guard Member may receive tuition credit if the member dies while serving in the active service.
The bill will be active official on January 1st, 2021.
