FEMA opening registration centers for Hurricane Sally assistance - AL.com

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is opening mobile registration intake centers in Atmore and Foley to help victims of Hurricane Sally apply for assistance.

The centers will be open from Sunday through Tuesday. One center will be in the parking lot of the Atmore City Hall Complex, 201 E Louisville Ave. The other will be at the Foley Satellite Courthouse, 201 E. Section Ave.

Both centers will be open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to help residents of Baldwin, Escambia, and Mobile counties affected by the storm. Additional centers will be announced in the three counties in the coming days.

People visiting the centers are highly encouraged to wear face coverings.

The centers are one option for registering with FEMA and applying for federal disaster assistance.

Survivors may also register for federal disaster assistance online www.disasterassistance.gov, by downloading the FEMA app to a smartphone or tablet, or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585. Helpline operators can questions about applications already submitted.

FEMA assistance for homeowners and renters can include grants for rent and repairs to make primary homes habitable. Grants can be used to replace essential household items and for medical and dental expenses and funeral and burial costs.

FEMA advises that people contact their insurance companies to file a claim for any disaster-related damage and to take photos or video of the damage and keep receipts for repair work.

FEMA recommends having certain information handy when contacting the agency to register for assistance:

  • Address of the damaged primary dwelling where the damage occurred
  • Current mailing address
  • Current telephone number
  • Insurance information
  • Total household annual income
  • Routing and account number for checking or savings account so FEMA may directly transfer disaster assistance funds
  • A description of disaster-caused damage and losses

When people report to FEMA that they cannot or may not be able to safely live in their home, it may be necessary for FEMA to perform an inspection of the damage. Inspections will be conducted by phone because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

FEMA will ask applicants for both their home and cell phone numbers, as well as their email address so FEMA can stay in contact.

For remote inspections, FEMA inspectors will contact applicants by phone or by email to answer questions about the type and extent of damage.

Survivors with minimal damage who can live in their homes will not automatically be scheduled for a home inspection when applying to FEMA. But they can request an inspection if they find more storm damage later.
