Securing steady employment can be a challenge under any circumstance. Oftentimes, it’s also integral to lifting families out of poverty, recovering from addiction, re-entering society and more. These Birmingham nonprofits are providing all kinds of employment help to those who need it. Check it out!

1. Central Six AlabamaWorks!

Central Six AlabamaWorks! is the regional branch of a larger, statewide initiative centered on employment in Alabama. They offer resources for employers, job seekers, students and more.

“The mission of Central Six Development Council, also known as Central Six AlabamaWorks, is to create a 21st-century workforce that is proactive, responsive, and results-driven; supports the region’s diverse population and employers; and, provides quality job opportunities in support of a vibrant regional economy.”

2. Community on the Rise

Community on the Rise does all kinds of incredible work with Birmingham’s homeless population. Their initiatives cover everything from community building to addiction recovery program placement, employment assistance and a whole lot more.

“Our mission is to offer education, healing, housing and employment to individuals experiencing homelessness in Birmingham. We work daily with our vulnerable neighbors to map out life plans and remove barriers to success.”

3. One Roof

One Roof is another awesome organization that serves Birmingham’s homeless population. They provide all kinds of great resources, including employment possibilities, employment for felons, clothing closets and more.

“One Roof’s mission is to equip and empower our community to prevent and end homelessness through advocacy, education, and coordination of services.”

4. Birmingham Jumpstart

Literacy efforts don’t just happen in elementary school classrooms. Birmingham Jumpstart’s programs focus on adults by improving their literacy and academic skills, which can drastically change lives. They offer GED classes that provide study materials, test-taking strategies and practice tests—in addition to scholarships that provide funds to take the GED test.

“Birmingham Jumpstart is a grassroots organization with a mission to serve the local community by providing learning curricula that will improve and enhance the academic skills of our adult neighbors.”

5. Shepherds Fold

Shepherds Fold helps transform lives from the inside out. Their six-month program provides basics like food, shelter, clothing and transportation. They also help with ID cards, aid in finding employment, provide basic financial knowledge courses as well as vocational rehabilitation and life skills, literacy assistance, help obtaining a GED diploma and work-related certifications.

“Shepherds Fold stands as one of the few remaining re-entry programs with transitional housing and supportive services in the state of Alabama.

Our six-month program is designed to provide opportunities that support successful transformations, from the inside out, to empower, strengthen and create productive, contributing members of society.”

Jimmie Hale Mission’s three branches all offer employment assistance and various educational resources to those they serve. JHM provides support for recovering addicts, women and children, homeless men and more. Get an inside look at their other locations, Jessie’s Place and Royal Pines.

“For three-quarters of a century the Jimmie Hale Mission has been helping men afflicted by homelessness in downtown Birmingham through education remediation, job readiness and spiritual support.”
