For someone interested in going to college, just getting started can be a financial challenge.
Before someone begins classes at a college, they must take the GRE or HiSET.
The Illinois Community College Board this week announced $500,000 in grant money to help Illinoisans pay for the high school equivalency test.
For example, with the GRE, the discount code takes the cost from $120 down to $40.
Officials at John Wood Community College said this financial assistance could be the added boost someone needs.
“This can be a game changer for some students, " Emily Dozier, JWCC adult education transition coordinator said. "For some students this may have been what was holding them back from getting a GED in the first place. Because 30 dollars may not seem like a lot of money to a lot of people, but if you’re struggling to make ends meat, that is a lot of money.”
John Wood Community College said it also offers extra assistance help students get their GED.
“With our program, we offer free GED preparation classes for Illinois residents age 16 and up, " Dozier said. "This helps make sure that students are truly ready to take the GED. We can also help them take free GED practice tests with us, where if they did it alone they would have to pay for those on the GED website.”
There are no eligibility requirements and anyone can use the discount codes.
