CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sam and Anne-Marie Petros donated $500,000 to Cuyahoga Community College to help students during the coronavirus pandemic.

Thousands of students have reached out to the college for resources during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a press release. The fund will offer emergency aid and tuition assistance, with a focus on helping low-income women with children.

Low-income women with children were highly affected by the strict social distancing measures put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19; child-care became limited, workplaces closed and many companies reduced staffing or pay.

The fund will provide support to students who do not qualify for federal funding.

The money becomes available for this year’s summer session.

Sam Petros established Northeast Ohio home building company Petros Homes, based in Broadview Heights, in 1985.

“It’s easy for one lost paycheck or sudden expense to interrupt someone’s education and become a barrier,” Sam Petros said in the release. “When we learned how Tri-C students were struggling during the pandemic, we wanted to do something that would have immediate impact. We believe in helping people who are trying to help themselves.”
