Sarasota to consider assistance program to help with water rate increase - Sarasota Herald-Tribune

The proposed assistance program is for low-income households

SARASOTA — The prospect of a massive $300 million overhaul of Sarasota’s neglected water and sewer infrastructure pushed city leaders last year to increase usage rates by 3.5% annually for the next decade.

But that steep rise caused discomfort among some commissioners, who were concerned that such a steep increase would hurt the city’s poorest residents.

Now city leaders are exploring the possibility of an assistance program that might help dampen the financial burden of these improvements and associate rate increases on low-income households.

City residents went from paying $80 a month for water and wastewater services — about average — to being charged $116.78 in the year 2030, for a cumulative increase of 45% over time.

If commissioners agree on Monday, city staff will study the size and scope of the program.
