Need food assistance? Here are resources for Vermonters during the coronavirus pandemic - Burlington Free Press

More Vermonters are searching for food assistance, as the economic pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic is leaving its toll on households across the state. 

It's been nearly a month since Gov. Phil Scott began a series of executive orders to shut down in-person business operations, and since then more Vermonters have faced the economic impact. 

Each day, more workers filed for unemployment, seeking temporary financial relief while they continue to keep up with living expenses such as rent, groceries or childcare.

In hopes of answering some general questions, here's a list of information that can help you or someone you know find their nearest food shelf or access food assistance benefits during this time.

Find a local food shelf

Vermont Food Bank provides an updated map of food shelves spread out across the state.

For more details on hours of operation, how to access food from these shelves, or to donate directly, contact them at the numbers provided. 

  • Feeding Chittenden in Burlington offers grocery pickups every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 228 North Winooski Ave., Burlington. (802) 658-7939.
  • South Burlington Food Shelf remains open Thursday evenings and Friday and Saturday mornings. 356 Dorset St., South Burlington. (802) 858-5267.
  • Winooski Food Shelf guests can access the pantry one Wednesday a month, while produce can be accessible fresh fruit and veggies both Saturdays. 2

  • Shelburne Food Shelf is conducting online and phone surveys to deliver groceries to residents during the pandemic.  5420 Shelburne Road, Shelburne. (802) 622-3313
  • Heavenly Food Pantry is located at the First Congregational Church in Essex Junction and is open to residents living in Essex, Essex Junction and Westford in need of food. 37 Main St., Essex. (802) 878-5745
  • Milton Family Community Center's Emergency Food Shelf is serving residents by appointment. 23 Villemaire Lane, Milton. (802) 893-1776
  • Colchester Community Food Shelf is offering curbside pick up groceries on Wednesdays from 12 to 6 p.m. 245 Main St., Colchester. (802) 879-2444
  • Richmond Food Shelf and Thrift Store's pre-packed and non-perishable 'Food-To-Go' is available for pickup and delivery for residents in Bolton, Huntington and Richmond. 58 Bridge St., Richmond. (802) 578-4283.
  • Williston Community Food Shelf provides food for residents in Williston, St. George, Richmond and Essex. 400 Cornerstone Dr., Suite 130, Williston. (802) 735-6303.

How to apply for food stamps (3SquaresVT)

3SquaresVT, the state name for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), is continuing to provide benefits for eligible households to purchase food during the pandemic.

Particularly for individuals or families that are experiencing unemployment or budgeting increased living expenses,

Food stamps can be used at grocery and convenience stores as well as participating CSAs. 

To determine eligibility, prospective applicants can call (855) 855-6181 or email 3SVT@vtfoodbank.org

Hunger Free Vermont provides a 'eligibility calculator' on its website to help Vermonters determine whether they can receive 3SquaresVT.
