As a state senator, I hear many stories from people who are affected directly or indirectly by the COVID-19 crisis. Because of its broad financial impact, I encourage qualified people to get signed up for the federal assistance coming our way. The earlier we take care of business on our end, the faster federal aid will start flowing our way.
I also want to acknowledge Michelle Kommer of the North Dakota Department of Commerce for her leadership during this fast-moving crisis. The department is providing many resources for North Dakota businesses and workers.
So, with expediency of assistance in mind, depending on your personal situation, please act promptly on the following actions that apply to you.
- Employees who have been laid off should file their claim for unemployment insurance immediately. If the automated system denies the person for eligibility, they should file an appeal because the system continues to be updated to meet the new requirements for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. - For self-employed business owners, independent contractors and gig-economy workers, the unemployment system is being updated so these North Dakotans can file under Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. The hopes are for the changes to go online this week. Learn more via this FAQ (updated frequently): shorturl.at/jpsvy.
- All businesses should contact their lender immediately to inform them of their interest in exploring options for relief through the Small Business Administration, so they are in the queue. Funds to assist with payroll, employee health insurance, rent and utilities will be made available by the SBA through local lenders with no fees paid by the business. Businesses may be eligible for additional loans, which lenders are being educated on this week. Learn more by visiting the Dept. of Commerce's COVID resource page at shorturl.at/enB79.
This is a stressful time. People can act now to get federal assistance flowing to North Dakota quickly. And, as always, let's remember we are in this together and we'll get through this together.
