Central Missouri Community Action’s assistance with energy bills has been extended to include anyone who has recently lost their job or been furloughed due to the COVID-19 crisis.
The assistance is available to people in all counties served by CMCA, including Cole, Boone, Callaway, Moniteau and Osage counties, and is honored by all utility companies in the service area.
“Many of the people who weren’t eligible for this assistance prior to the current health crisis are now eligible due to a loss of income,” CMCA Chief Program Officer Angela Hirsch said in a news release.
CMCA provides utility assistance for low-income families through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Applications for the LIHEAP program can be obtained at cmca.us/get-help/energy-assistance/ or at mydss.mo.gov/energy-assistance.
Eligibility requirements for LIHEAP are based on income and household size. To qualify for LIHEAP assistance, an applicant must be responsible for paying home heating and cooling costs; be a U.S. citizen or have been legally admitted for permanent residence; have $3,000 or less in bank accounts, retirement accounts or investments; and have a household income less than 135 percent of the federal poverty level (a monthly income of $2,400 for a family of three or $2,897 for a family of four).
In addition to LIHEAP, low-income families may also qualify for the Energy Crisis Intervention Program that helps pay heating and cooling costs when a household’s energy is shut off or threatened to be shut off.
CMCA is accepting LIHEAP applications by mail at their office, 800 North Providence Road, Columbia, MO, 65203.
