Federal support was approved to help relieve doctors and nurses in two hospitals in Michigan.
The federal government is sending two teams of 22 medical personnel each to relieve doctors and nurses at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids and Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn.
“I’m grateful that the federal government has granted our request to provide much-needed relief to the health care personnel who have remained on the frontlines of this pandemic,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement. “Right now, our doctors and nurses are reporting the vast majority of their patients are unvaccinated or have not yet received a booster dose.”
The relief teams consist of registered nurses, doctors and respiratory therapists, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. They will work with these Michigan hospitals for a period of 30 days, which may be extended.
“The virus has exhausted our teams and resulted in unprecedented staffing challenges at Beaumont Health and health systems across the state,” Beaumont Health CEO John Fox said in a statement.
Michigan hospitals have seen unexpected strain due to a spike in COVID-19 patients, the majority of whom are currently unvaccinated. From Oct. 7-Nov. 5, 76,201 out of 105,043 cases were among the unvaccinated, according to MDHHS.
Hospitals throughout the state have initiated special protocol to keep up with the increased demand. Munson hospital, which services northern Michigan, and Spectrum Health, which services Western Michigan, have both declared Pandemic Response Level Red. This means that the hospitals are prioritizing COVID-19 care and transmission mitigation efforts.
“On behalf of our physicians, team members and patients we are grateful for the Department of Defense medical team and appreciate support from state and federal levels as we take every measure to care for our community,” Tina Freese Decker, president and CEO of Spectrum Health, said in a statement. “Working together we can address this urgent public health crisis, relieve the strain on our teams and continue to provide high quality care.”
According to the MDHHS, over 20% of current hospital patients throughout the state are COVID positive.
