Local organizations host clinic for rental assistance applications - KSNB Local 4

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - 2020 was a rough year for many people and while a lot of them have gotten back to a normal, not everyone has recovered financially. Now the state of Nebraska wants to help.

They set aside about $158 million for rental assistance. That money is ready to help any US citizen and Nebraska resident who can prove they’ve been financially impacted by the pandemic and are now behind on rent. The state is offering the assistance for as far back as April of 2020.

The application is a simple online process, but the problem is not everyone has access to the internet or a computer.

“A group of us got together and started talking about how we wanted to make sure if there were any barriers for people, we wanted to find a way and a solution to help people work through those,” Hope Harbor Director Liz Mayfield told Local4 News.

Hope Harbor partnered with the Grand Island Public Library and Hall County Community Collaborative on Monday to host a clinic to help people apply. There were interpreters and legal aide on site as well to assist in the process.

“This program is specifically really key to making sure when eviction moratorium are lifted and things get back to normal, that we don’t have renters out there with large bills that can cause their eviction,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield said there’s a lot of people still struggling to get back on their feet. To prevent a large increase in newly homeless families, she strongly encourages people in need to reach out.

“If they’re facing eviction due to non payments and it’s only waved off because of the moratorium, we want to ensure that when that rent moratorium is lifted that they have their back rent paid and are able to stay safely housed,” Mayfield said.

The groups will be hosting another clinic on Wednesday at the library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., then again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
