PEORIA (HOI) -- Peoria leaders are excited about new childcare grants coming to the south side under the American Rescue Plan.
"We've been able to help ensure that childcare providers can safely reopen and operate," Representative Cheri Bustos (D-IL) said in a Wednesday morning press conference.
The bill, signed into law by President Biden in March, provides a block grant helping offset childcare costs.
Tri-County Urban League CEO Laraine Bryson says that money will help many struggling because of the pandemic.
"Now that we are in community re-opening, we need childcare to assist our families as they start to go back to work," Bryson said. "So that we can rebuild our economy."
Bryson herself is a virtual guest of Rep. Bustos for President Biden's first address to Congress. She says the money will help all parties involved; childcare providers, parents and the children themselves.
Employees at the Urban League say the money will be a huge boost to their efforts.
"This will help them pay for the daycare, and then also they can go out and find a job while the kids are in daycare," Ronald Ruffin said.
The American Rescue Plan provides $39 billion for childcare providers. Bryson says the program is still in its early stags, and they are still figuring out how disbursement will work.
