Assistance League aids Sunnyvale schools

The Assistance League of Los Altos recently partnered with the Sunnyvale School District to support the district’s virtual learning and school reopening efforts.

The Assistance League last August donated more than 6,000 school supplies for remote learning, including lap trays, lap desks, noise-canceling earphones and iPad cases. League members also donated Safeway and Grocery Outlet gift cards to families who fell on hard times.

League members worked with five Sunnyvale principals in February to prepare for school reopening in March, donating more than 900 Spanish library and classroom books highlighting the Read Across America campaign and equity-focused topics.

“Because of the League’s generous donations, we were able to curate a fantastic and diverse Spanish library that will support students joining our new Juntos Spanish-English Dual-Immersion Program,” said Joseph Salazar, librarian at Columbia Middle School in Sunnyvale. “Your donation will allow us to get more books into kids’ hands and continue our work to foster a love of reading.”

In February, the Assistance League donated another $20,000 worth of supplies for reopening efforts.

She is the author of two best-selling novels, “The Distant Land of My Father” and “City of Tranquil Light,” and is in the process of writing her third.
