FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) -- The global pandemic has affected so many people and some organizations in Fort Wayne want to help those who may need it.

The Fire Police City County Federal Credit Union and the Fort Wayne Mad Ants partnered for the "Together We Can Food Drive" Saturday afternoon.

Organizers say their goal is to get 1200 pounds of non-perishable food items within these next few weeks and they're hoping the community will help make this happen.

Jim Shovlin from the Fort Wayne Mad Ants helped organize the event and he says he wanted to be a part of a great cause.

"Knowing that they've had a history of helping communities in the past, I was excited and looked forward to jumping in and helping out as well because I like to give back to others if I can,” Shovlin said.

The event went from noon to two and several people came to the “Fill the Bus" on Lima Road.

From its members to the community, anyone can donate at all six locations in Fort Wayne and New Haven.

"There is so many people that are out of work, so many people that are hungry and the Community Harvest Food Bank does everything they can,” Shovlin said. “They do everything in their power to feed the hungry in this community and we're just helping to keep things stocked so they can indeed to do that."

Marketing manager of The Fire Police City County Federal Credit Union, Sarah Rippe says they want to try and double there total in 2019 of 750 pounds.

She tells ABC21, she's grateful to be a part of something like this.

"It's really great,” Rippe said. “It feels really good to give back to our community. We're glad that everybody wants to come out and actually give a little bit of themselves too. We know that it's going back into the Fort Wayne community."

For those who donate, it will go directly to the Community Harvest Food Bank.

ABC21 talked with one community member who donated and he says whoever he can help, he will do it.

"For one thing, God has blessed me,” Kurt Fahsling said who donated food. “I have the money to do it and I'm more than happy. It helps our community, it doesn't matter who they are, skin color nothing, they need help. We need to help them. It's in my heart to do that."

Another “Fill the Bus” event will take place Saturday February 20 at 10123 Lima Road from noon to two.

Donations will also be accepted during business hours at all Fire Police City County Locations until March 1.
