James Harden has dished out a lot of assists on the basketball court this season, but his most important assist is coming off the court.

With the state of Texas dealing with a prolonged power and water crisis as a result of a winter storm, Harden has been working to help the city of Houston, where he played from 2012-21 before being dealt last month to the Nets.

On Saturday, Harden donated 3,000 meals to Houstonians through his new restaurant “Thirteen,” and has also worked to donate much-needed water and plumbing help.

“I’m on phone calls literally every day all day, trying to impact the city because they’ve shown me so much love and respect in the time that I was there so I call Houston home,” Harden said after putting up 37 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds as the Nets won their sixth straight and completed a perfect 5-0 West Coast swing with a 112-108 victory over the Clippers.

“It’s devastating, obviously. This is probably worse than the hurricane just because we don’t know how many people are affected, not having electricity, not having power, not able to eat or be outside or whatever the case may be.”

Harden is also working with contractors and plumbers to help with burst pipes caused by the frigid conditions.

“We’re trying to feed as many people as we can,” he said. “[Also] a lot of water, shout out to Body Armor who’s helping me with that, we’re getting a lot of water shipped in this week for people, which I’ll be posting. And then as far as plumbing, I reached out and I’m in contact with some plumbing companies that have been for these last few days taking care of 7-8 houses a day patching up these pipes because once the electricity came back on, pipes are likely to burst and we’ve seen so many cases of that in Houston that I’ve been in contact with Mayor [Sylvester] Turner, the Relief Gang, just so many people that are able to help while I’m not there and obviously this is a huge problem, but I try to impact it and help as much as I can while I’m not there.”

Harden had an ugly falling out with the Rockets after he skipped the beginning of training camp and then asked to be traded, saying last month the Rockets just “didn’t have a chance to win.”

Since Harden joined the Nets, they are 13-6 and now sit at 20-12, half a game behind Philadelphia

Still, he maintains strong ties to Houston and pledged to continue supporting the people there.

“And it won’t stop because there’s so many people that’s been affected,” he said, “that I can’t stop.”
