Indianapolis pumps more cash into rental assistance program with 25,000 on waiting list - IndyStar

Indianapolis is gradually reducing its wait list of thousands of residents seeking rental assistance after an infusion of an additional $7.5 million in federal CARES Act funding for the program.

The money boosts a program that was swamped with demand within the first few days of opening in July, forcing the city to temporarily suspend applications and place people on a waiting list.

That list has grown to 25,000, though demand has slowed, Deputy Mayor Jeff Bennett said.

“I can’t say that we’re at the end of this because this is an issue that we’re going to need to kind of pay attention to for the foreseeable future,” he said.

The city is processing roughly 1,000 people off the wait list each day beginning with those who first signed up in July. People who submitted their information at indyrent.org will likely see an email inviting them to complete an application, Bennett said.

The program has so far distributed roughly $6.6 million to 3,319 households with an average payment of $1,989.

State provides lifeline to program: Indiana boosts funding for rental assistance during coronavirus pandemic

What to know: Details on the Indianapolis rental assistance program

Residents can apply online at indyrent.org to potentially receive 90 days worth of rent. The program requires landlord cooperation and approval. Eligible recipients must be a renter in Marion County whose income has been reduced due to the pandemic.

The program is separate from the state's rental assistance program, which is for residents outside Marion County.

Indianapolis has received a total of $168 million in federal Cares Act funding, which the City-County Council has approved in portions for various services such as homelessness services, food distribution, economic recovery and coronavirus testing.

But officials have warned that the federal assistance won't be enough to aid Indianapolis in the long term as it recovers from the economic and health crisis.

The additional rental assistance funding adds to the $15 million in rental help that the council initially approved in June, kickstarting a program run through the John Boner Neighborhood Centers with assistance from other neighborhood organizations. The city also received funding from the Lilly Endowment.

The council has so far approved two allotments of the total $168 million in federal CARES Act funding.

The most recent allotment includes $2.9 million for masks, $1.1 million for a rapid GED equivalency program and $1 million for a marketing campaign run through Visit Indy to encourage Indiana residents to visit the city.
