Colorado Child Care Assistance Program is Available to Qualifying Families - Canon City Daily Record

The Fremont County Department of Human Services is excited to announce that federal guidance has been received as to when the cost of child care can be covered for school-aged children through the Colorado Child Care Assistance Program.

CCCAP is a program that provides eligible households with access to high quality, affordable child care that supports healthy child development and school readiness while promoting household self-sufficiency and informed child care choices.

Counties are able to authorize and pay for care of school-age children while they are completing remote, virtual or online schoolwork as long as the child care provider is strictly providing care and supervision of the child who is participating in remote learning activities.  The child-care providers may supplement or build upon the academic program, as long as the assistance does not take the place of the academic program obtained through a public or private school.  Having this flexibility is a plus for families who need child care during school hours, especially during this pandemic with the schools having to adjust their processes to meeting social distancing guidelines.

There are some exemptions that would be considered where the cost of child care could be covered that are COVID related. Those may include but not limited to:

  • Parent doesn’t want child in school but will take to daycare as it is a smaller setting.
  • School is offering a virtual learning option and child has nowhere else to go.
  • School is offering combination of in-class and virtual learning and child needs to attend on the virtual days.
  • Remote learning is not a set schedule and student works their own pace.
  • Child is unable to attend school due to the high risk family member in the home.
  • Child can attend during the day and parent will assist with virtual learning or homeschooling during the evening hours.

Those interested may apply for CCCAP via PEAK at http://www.colorado.gov/PEAK or stop by the office at 172 Justice Center Road to obtain a paper application. For more information, call 719-275-2318.

Fremont County DHS wants to ensure families receive their SNAP benefits.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps feed families. The program experienced a surge in applicants across the state starting in late March. People who applied in March must turn in redetermination paperwork this month in order to receive September benefits timely.  There are 390 SNAP redeterminations due for this month.

The SNAP program, like other assistance programs, requires information to be updated at regular intervals to maintain eligibility.  Fremont County had 410 SNAP redeterminations due in July for August assistance and of those, 195 were not received, which causes the case to close and stops the benefits from going to the families.

If you did not turn in your redetermination, you can still do so. The redetermination will be processed and you can receive a prorated amount of benefits for August.  If you do not turn in your redetermination by Aug. 31, you will be required to reapply for assistance. Documents required for redeterminations may be submitted via PEAK at http://www.colorado.gov/PEAK.  You can also provide them in person at the Fremont County Department of Human Services, 172 Justice Center Road.  There is a dropbox in the parking lot for your convenience if you choose to not come into the building or are submitting your documents after business hours.

Those receiving assistance are required to submit updates and changes that could impact their eligibility every 6 months or every year for the disabled and/or elderly. Some federal and state operations were adjusted started in March in response to the pandemic. Temporary waivers were approved to ease program operations and protect the health of participants.

SNAP allows families who are struggling to purchase food and important nourishment for themselves and their children.  This is why it is so important to have the redeterminations turned in and processes so that families do not have to do without.
