United Way gives $200,000 for Midland County housing assistance - MLive.com

MIDLAND, MI - United Way of Midland County, the nonprofit organization that has helped coordinate the county’s flood disaster relief after the collapse of the Edenville Dam, is giving $200,000 for short-term housing for affected residents.

The money will go toward the initial costs of new living situations, including security deposits and rent assistance for up to six months. The assistance is based on financial need and will prioritize those heavily affected by the flooding, according to a news release.

The organization is also giving up to $5,000 per household to help fix problems with well water, including switching homes to the city’s water system or drilling a new well. About 25 county residents are reporting well water problems, according to the release.

The dam collapse and subsequent flooding displaced about 10,000 residents of the surrounding areas, including Gladwin and Midland counties. The floods damaged thousands of homes, including about 900 in Midland County, more than 115 of which were completely destroyed, according to the release.

Local officials have directed personal donations to United Way since recovery efforts began. Since the flooding, United Way received roughly $1.2 million in items donated to help affected residents, according to the release.

“That incredible generosity is helping to stretch local dollars while meeting the critical needs of our neighbors,” said Holly Miller, president of United Way of Midland County, in the release.

The organization encouraged those struggling to find stable access to housing or water to call Home to Stay, Midland County’s housing assistance center, at (989) 496-9550.
