Dallas County announced a new program Thursday to provide housing assistance for people facing economic hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic. The program is for people who live outside the City of Dallas.
The Emergency Housing Assistance Program will provide short-term, rental, mortgage and utility assistance, officials said. Those who are eligible will be chosen through a lottery system. Applicants must provide documentation and be over the age of 18, officials said.
The pre-screening application opened July 1 and will be available on the County’s website in English and Spanish until July 9 at 4 p.m. Applicants can also call 214-819-1968 Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. if they cannot access the application online.
“There’s no advantage if someone has faster internet,” said Dr. Philip Huang, the county’s public-health director at a news conference. “If you have to use a phone to access it, you’re not at a disadvantage. Everyone who gets in during that (application) time will be in the lottery system to be available.”
Huang said the maximum duration of assistance available is three months.
