MONROE, La. (KNOE) - ULM has been assisting student-parents with childcare costs through its TRIO programs. They said they want student-parents to know this help is available at a time when many are dealing with pandemic-related financial burdens.
There are 20 ULM student-parents and 23 children enrolled for fall 2020. There are currently slots available for over 10 more children.
TRIO is a U.S. Department of Education program serving first-generation and low-income students. It is made possible thanks to federal funding and a grant from the program “Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS).
“It’s always been a struggle, daycare is so expensive. And honestly, I don’t know how the college student, how these students do it. Going to school full time, working full time or part-time and raising a child, and trying to pay for childcare. And all the other living expenses,” said Child Care Coordinator Tammy Anderson.
ULM is one of two colleges statewide offering this program to student-parents. In addition to financial assistance, they will also receive training in financial literacy and parenting workshops. Anderson said they will also work with student-parents to get tutoring for their classes.
She said the goal is to do everything they can to help student-parents graduate despite their circumstances.
“I see their struggle and I see their struggle with not just schoolwork, but their financial struggles. And this program, it really turns them around. It gives them hope to finish their degree. Something to look forward to,” said Anderson.
Interested applicants must be a full-time student, have at least a 2.0 GPA, and be income-eligible. They can apply on the ULM TRIO website.
