Food insecurity is something that has affected more and more families during this health pandemic. The assistance is called the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer or P-EBT. It's part of the SNAP program as a one-time food benefit available to families with children who were receiving free or reduced-price meals. Families have until July 31 to apply for this food assistance.
"We want to make sure that people access them. We have a surge of hunger coming our way unlike anything we've seen since the Great Depression so these benefits are more important than ever before," said Allison O'Toole, the CEO of Second Harvest Heartland.
An estimated 3,061 students in St. Louis County remain eligible for this temporary food benefit. It's estimated that by August, one in eight Minnesotans will face hunger. Families who apply for P-BET can get up to $325 per child to spend on groceries.
Food banks are already seeing the demand grow with unemployment benefits ending soon. Donations are needed even more now for food banks like Second Harvest.
