Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have recommended that masks be worn to slow the spread of the disease when around others.
For some, depending on the type of mask worn, it can be very uncomfortable to have two elastic bands attached to the masks pulling behind their ears.
Jaymin Whitehead experienced that even before the pandemic started.
He works for the City of Wichita Falls and said when needing to wear a mask while working, he disliked the pain the masks caused to his ears.
He thought that people who would have to wear masks for 8-12 hours each shift could use the relief.
"I've only had to wear a mask for a short period of time, not for a full shift," Whitehead said.
Whitehead has made close to 400 mask clips and gave them to the Wichita Falls Health Department, United Regional and anyone who reached out to him.
"I figured it would be a cool way for me to try to help other people," he said.
Mask clips are used with masks that have elastic bands to make it easier on the ears.
Whitehead said he is mainly contacted through Facebook for mask clips.
He uses a 3D printer to make the mask clips. Whitehead said that in the amount of time it takes to print one mask he can make about 20 mask clips.
"I feel that it's a better, more effective use of my time and my tools," he said.
Adding to his decision to make mask clips, the many people making masks at home or businesses converting equipment to manufacture them.
"These clips have been a way for people to continue using the masks that they already have and use them for a longer period of time," he said.
Whitehead said that it's important for him to help other people as much as he can.
He offers the mask clips for free to health care workers.
"I've accepted donations for material cost fulfillment," he said. "If more need the clips or anything else like that I'd love to continue helping."
