Aquarion Water Company customers could receive help from the water supplier during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a Wednesday news release, Aquarion no longer is requiring income-based assistance and is “permitting anyone with proven need to apply for a grant.” Applications for assistance also are being offered to small-business owners instead of just homeowners and renters.
Aquarion is waiving a requirement for customers to have paid 35% of their outstanding balance or made four payments in the last year to qualify.
“In January, Aquarion partnered with Operation Fuel and allocated $50,000 for one-time grants to assist customers in need with water bill payments,” the release reads. “Now, with many families facing financial crisis because of COVID-19-related job loss or reduced work hours, Aquarion has modified its requirements so more households and small businesses can seek assistance.”
Operation Fuel is a private nonprofit that provides energy assistance to people who are low-income, elderly or disabled and in a financial crisis. Aquarion supplies water for approximately 625,000 people in Connecticut, including customers in Groton, Norwich and Stonington.
