COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The United States Department of Health and Human Services is giving more than $140 million to Ohio’s Home Energy Assistance Program to help eligible residents offset the costs of home energy bills, according to a news release issued Friday by the office of Toledo Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur.
The money comes from H.R. 5305 -- the Extending Government Funding and Delivering Emergency Assistance Act -- which Congress passed earlier this year to avoid a partial federal shutdown and keep the government funded through Dec. 3. The act includes a short-term continuing resolution that provides supplemental appropriations for disaster relief and other programs.
It was signed into law by President Joe Biden on Sept. 30.
The Ohio Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Under the program, individuals, families and senior citizens with household incomes at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty line may receive a one-time financial benefit applied to their utility or bulk fuel bills.
Any residents who are interested in applying for HEAP assistance can call their local energy assistance provider:
