The Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) has requested the public’s help in identifying the individual(s) responsible for stealing beach safety signs and additional National Park Service property, per a recent update from CHNS.
“Over the last couple [of] weeks, Cape Hatteras National Seashore employees have noticed that several signs have been taken from Buxton Beach Access and the beach near Cape Hatteras Lighthouse,” stated a social media update posted on November 19.
“A submerged hazard sign near the Buxton jetties was one of the signs taken. Other stolen signs include a reserved handicap parking sign, Dare County Community Crime Line sign, an Outer Banks National Scenic Byway sign, (stolen several months ago), speed limit sign, no parking signs and other regulatory signs.”
“Additionally, decorative rope, strung through parking bollards, at new parking areas on Hatteras Island, has been cut and stolen.”
An active law enforcement investigation is underway regarding these stolen signs and rope. CHNS is asking visitors and residents who may have been in the area to contact them if they happened to observe any suspicious activity, or if they have seen any social media posts related to the theft of these items.
