According to the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio, about 213,000 Ohio households are behind on rent, and about 134,000 renters are facing eviction in the next two months. With the federal eviction moratoriums ending, many who were previously protected are now at risk
Kevin Nowak is the Executive Director of CHN Housing Partners. They handle the rental assistance programs in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. Nowak says that even before the moratorium period ended, they could see the need for rental assistance rising.
“We were on average seeing 60 or so applications," said Nowak, "And on August second, which was the first work day after the moratorium expired, we saw over a hundred applications that day.”
Despite the growing housing crisis, landlords in Ohio are fighting for evictions to resume. They say they need the rent to pay their own bills, and that there is undistributed COVID rental assistance still available.
