SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - The Louisiana American Red Cross and area fire departments are ready to help those expected to be impacted by Hurricane Ida.

Stephanie Fox, a spokesperson with the Louisiana Regions of Red Cross, says about 500 volunteers will go to southeast Louisiana on Saturday, Aug. 28.

Fox says Red Cross has the proper necessities to handle events like this.

“Red Cross has been preparing for many many days to ensure that we had adequate supplies, adequate staffing, and that we have all our ducks in a row with our partners to ensure that we can respond whenever and wherever that impact may be as we await the arrival of Hurricane Ida,” she said.

Fox says she encourages everyone to take the hurricane seriously and stay safe.

The Shreveport Fire Department, Bossier City Fire Department and Caddo Parish Fire District #4 sent seven crew members to Port Allen. The crews are on standby as a rapid response team for water rescue in areas facing the greatest danger from Hurricane Ida.

“We’re here to take care, not only of the city of Shreveport and North Louisiana but the entire state. We’re blessed to have the men and women of the Shreveport Fire Department that volunteered to do this,” said Skip Pinkston, director of operations with the Shreveport Fire Department.

An emergency shelter is also open for evacuees, ready to take in as many people as they can with COVID-19 guidance in place.

“That’s a general population shelter. So, anybody who drives up they will be able to seek refuge their and it also accommodates pets,” said Sean Ellis, deputy communications director with the Louisiana Department of Family Services.
