FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) -- In the past week, nearly 100 Fort Wayne residents have asked just one organization for help to clear their driveways and walkways of snow.

"Me being healthy to be able to come out and help her with that, just very gratifying to help in just a small way," Jeff Shatto said.

Shatto works for NeighborLink, an organization that connects people who need help with projects to volunteers who can do them.

NeighborLink has provided volunteers for several projects for the woman who owns this home.

Shatto says her health has declined in the past few years and is now confined to a wheelchair, and says shoveling her driveway is not a matter of aesthetics.

"She missed a doctor's appointment last Friday because she couldn't catch a ride with CTN getting her wheelchair out. And so it was really important to make a path for her today so she can get to her next doctor's appointment and get out to the bus to make it to the doctor's appointment," he said.

In about the past week, NeighborLink has fielded nearly 100 requests for help with snow.

This woman is certainly not alone.

In about the past week, NeighborLink has fielded nearly 100 requests for help with snow.

Not only do some people need it cleared to get out of their homes, others may need it cleared so others can get in, like nursing assistance or homebound meals.

That's on top of other needs like heating, plumbing, roofing, gutters, and even moving heavy items from one room to another.

"Homeowners not only appreciate the physical help, but they also appreciate the social interaction," NeighborLink's Beth McAvoy said.

As you might imagine, NeighborLink is always looking for volunteers who can select projects that are near or interest them.

"Following a couple steps in becoming an approved volunteer can get you access to the website, which then can get you access to our neighbors' private information," McAvoy said.

She says some volunteers end up taking care of the same neighbors over and over again.

"I think you walk away with a feeling of just overwhelm and I really put my time to good use," Shatto said.

Shatto plans to check on the woman's property later this week, to make sure she can get out to meet the bus so she can get to her doctor's appointment.

If you need help with a project, or would like to volunteer for one, call NeighborLink at (260) 209-0074 or visit the website.
