Topline
Rep. Kim Schrier (D-Wash.) said Thursday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into whether Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol last week in an effort to overturn the election received help from within Congress.
Key Facts
In an interview with financial news network Cheddar, Schrier said she is “concerned” that the Trump fans who stormed the Capitol got inside help, citing “videos of assistance” as well as a handful of House members “joining the president in inciting the violence and inviting the mob and giving a fist in the air.”
Schrier said it is “already being looked into, by the FBI... who inside was helping the perpetrators,” claiming that the mob was able to find locations in the building that she “probably could not find.”
Schrier pointed to Rep. Mickie Sherrill’s (D-N.J.) allegation that some lawmakers led “reconnaissance” tours for some of the Trump supporters who were involved in the attack just one day before it occurred.
Schrier said the fact that only members can authorize tours – and that there appeared to be “insider knowledge” among the mob – “suggests some of my colleagues may have been co-conspirators.”
Forbes has reached out to the FBI and Department of Justice for comment.
Key Background
Several Trump allies in Congress have come under fire for their connections to the Trump supporters. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) tweeted about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s whereabouts during the attack along with supportive messages to the mob. “#StopTheSteal” organizer Ali Alexander said he got assistance from Reps. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) in organizing the rally, and that the four of them “schemed up of putting maximum pressure on Congress while they were voting.”
Big Number
34. That’s how many members of Congress, led by Sherrill, signed onto a letter to the House and Senate sergeants at arms and the U.S. Capitol Police asking them to look into the alleged “reconnaissance” tours. Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), who heads the subcommittee that oversees the Capitol Police, told NPR that the matter is being investigated.
Crucial Quote
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said on an Instagram Live chat Tuesday that she avoided a particular “secure location” because “there were QAnon and white supremacist members of Congress who I felt would disclose my location and create opportunities to allow me to be hurt.”
Surprising Fact
Even House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) has said he suspects there was “something going on” with regards to coordination between the mob and people inside Congress. "They knew where to go... staff are saying that they saw people being allowed into the building through side doors,” Clyburn told CBS News, declaring, “Somebody on the inside of those buildings were complicit in this.”
