SANTA CRUZ — The County of Santa Cruz announced Wednesday that funding through its Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act is still available for applicants seeking rental assistance.
Shortly after the pandemic hit, the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors allocated part of the CARES Act funding to assisting low-income renters in unincorporated county who have lost income due to the effects of COVID-19 and are behind on their rent and/or utility payments. The assistance can cover selected applicants’ paid or partially paid rent as well as utility payments going back to April 1 of this year (up to $10,000 per household).
According to the county’s statement, renters in unincorporated Santa Cruz County whose gross annual household income is at or less than 80% of area median income are eligible to participate in the program implemented by local nonprofits Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County and Families in Transition. For a single-family home in Santa Cruz County, income would not exceed $74,350 a year.
To qualify for rental assistance, applicants’ landlords must submit a W-9 and lease documentation as a part of the application.
The deadline to apply for assistance is 5 p.m. Nov. 16. The applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis until funding is gone.
