Hope Harbor Rent Assistance Program helps people affected by COVID-19 - KSNB

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Coronavirus pandemic has caused some families’ bills to pile up with no way to bail themselves out, but Hope Harbor in Grand Island is flashing light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’ve been on a furlough from my job and the whole COVID-19 thing really affected me and my family,” said Lyssa lanzemdorv. “I just had a baby.”

Lyssa Lanzemdorv had been on maternity leave since April. She was supposed to return in May, but her factory job couldn’t take her back, since imports were closed. She didn’t know how she was going to get by.

“I was getting low on diapers and I had quite a bit of rent left.”

She went to Hope Harbor to get some diapers for her son, but walked out with a way to pay for her rent and utilities.

“There’s this lady.” said Lanzemdorv. “She’s been here for a while and had mentioned to me that they were helping out with rental assistance.”

Hope Harbor started the program about a month ago. It offers one-time rental assistance to anyone affected by COVID-19.

“If you had a decrease in hours, I mean even if it’s just a week or two weeks, and then if they lost they’re job,” said Hope Harbor’s Service Coordinator Peachis Mason.

They’ve already helped about 40 families during the month of July with their rent, mortgage, utilities, and home deposits.

“The people who have been affected by COVID-19, they’re now working and stuff and it just kind of helps them get caught up and stuff,” said Mason.

Most people who apply for the program are ashamed to ask for help. Some of them have never gone through this before. There are also people who have, but are embarrassed to be in this position again.

“I’m not here to judge them, said Mason. “I’m just here to help them get back on their feet.”

Lanzemdorv had lived at the shelter before when she was going through a rough time six years ago. At first, she was embarrassed to accept their offer to help again.

“At the time I was like no I don’t need it, I’ll struggle and figure it out,” said Lanzemdorv. “I don’t need to take money from you guys.”

She talked it over with her husband, and he convinced her to apply for the program.

“He said we could use it to get more diapers, because 15 diapers is not going to last two weeks,” said Lanzemdorv.

Lanzemdorv eventually ended up applying for the program and in the same day, Hope Harbor took care of her rent and utilities. Sometimes if the rent bill is low, they will also pay people’s utility bills.

She learned through this experience to never be embarrassed to ask for assistance.

“Don’t feel ashamed,” said Lanzemdorv. “I mean we’re in a really rough time right now and you can’t really can’t change that. There’s things you can’t help, so I mean if there here to help, take it.”

People need to come in to Hope Harbor to get an application for the program. They can fill it out there or at home but they will need a copy of their drivers license, bill, lease, a pay stub, or any document showing a decrease in pay. The shelter gets back to applicants within 24 to 48 hours of submitting the application. For more information on the rent assistance program visit their website.
